Protesters in Malls

The California Supreme Court ruled that a San Diego mall had violated the state's free speech law when it barred protesters from distributing leaflets in front of stores inside the mall. The protesters were members of a labor union that represented pressroom employees of the San Diego Union-Tribune. The union members were trying to pressure the newspaper by using leaflets, hopefully to garner public support for their cause.
The majority of the Court stated, “A shopping mall is a public forum in which persons may reasonably exercise their right to free speech.” (Source: Security Newsletter, January 2, 2008.)
